White Fields Basketball Program Update
Our basketball season went November 8th, 2011 through February 15th, 2012, with a total of fourteen sessions. We averaged 30 boys from ages 10 to 15 weekly, and provided lifestyle mentoring, Biblical teaching, and a Christian manhood focus. Also, several outside churches partnered with us to provide meals for the boys after each session. From March 3rd to April 14th, 2012, we are supplying weekly support and a volunteer to the Homewood travelling basketball team through van transportation, and after-game meals for the players and coaches. We appreciate our continuing relationship with the Homewood-Brushton Y.M.C.A., and look for ways to strengthen that partnership.
White Fields Basketball Program at the Homewood YMCA
Our winter basketball/mentoring program at the Homewood YMCA will run weekly on Wednesdays from 6-8pm, starting October 25th, 2011, and running through February 8th, 2012. We’re focusing on working with 30-40 boys in grades 5 through 8. In February and March, we will be assisting the Y with coaching two travel basketball teams, who will play 8 games followed by play-offs.
This is our second year hosting this basketball program, and many of the boys have been involved in previous seasons of baseball and basketball. Nate Brown, Brennan Gaertner, and Leo Wisniewski will be coordinating this program, along with volunteer coordinator Joe Goldcamp. In the second year of our partnership with the Y, we continue to meet an important programming need for middle school boys. Teams will be formed in the league and one-to-one mentoring relationships are the goal as they have the potential for the greatest impact on at-risk young men. The content of this mentoring involves life skills training, emphasized through practices and games. It includes instructional messages on character and faith development, as well as special events such as camp participation. Small group breakdown meetings will be done each week to go deeper with the weekly messages (large group) and to facilitate close personal relationships with our volunteers. Discipleship of young Christians is the ultimate goal in these relationships. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities for this program, please send an email to Rachel for more information.
White Fields 2011 Little League Baseball with Homewood Baseball Association
We have completed our 2011 baseball season for boys; T-Ball for ages 7 – 8, Little League for ages 9 – 12, and some sponsorship also for a Pony team (13-14). We had a successful year with over 60 young people participating. Our August 14th Banquet was a big hit with the players and parents! Thanks to our sponsor, Concordia Lutheran Ministries, each player received an artistic baseball trophy with their name engraved on it and many of them enjoyed an overnight camp experience (8/24-25) at Summer’s Best 2 Weeks. It was a great finish to our summer. Click here to view pictures from SB2W Camp. Harold Wagner from the newly formed Homewood Baseball Association was our acting commissioner this year. Thanks to all of the Homewood coaches for their service. Special thanks to Providence Church (Bethel Park) for their volunteers who donated, cooked, and served food on special days throughout the season. Shout out to John Cullen who coached 20 Tee ball kids this summer. He was our White Fields volunteer of the year. If you would like to contact Harold, click here or contact Leo Wisniewski.
