White Fields & The Homewood Y Launching Winter Basketball

Beginning November 9th and running consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. a basketball program will be available to young men grades 5th through 8th. The weekly program will include recreational basketball, food and refreshments, and small group mentoring from a Christian perspective. There will be no charge to participants. The program is being done by White Fields Foundation in collaboration with the Y through the leadership of Branch Manager, Thomas Wallace. Collaborations with existing Homewood organizations such as the Y and Homewood Community Sports (Little League Baseball) are being developed by White Fields Foundation to use sports as a tool in a faith-based approach to mentor children.

Our winter basketball/mentoring program is projected to launch November 9th of 2010 and run for 3 months. We anticipate growing the program to between 50-60 boys in grades 5 through 8. This program will meet an important programming need for the Y targeting middle school boys. We will utilize WF volunteers who are paired with men from Homewood in a coaching/mentoring role. Teams will be formed in the league to facilitate small group interaction around weekly messages on life skills and God’s Word. One-to-one mentoring relationships are the goal as they have the potential for the greatest impact on at-risk young men. Small group breakdown meetings will be done each week to go deeper with the weekly messages (large group) and to facilitate close personal relationships. Keep checking back for more updates!
